For this week's Speechless Sunday photo (with words =P), I'm sharing a bit of fun we had in an oceanfront park and playground in New Smyrna Beach a couple of month's ago. My daughter and I, and a couple of friends decided to stop by a little playground located directly on the ocean. It's so much fun to do silly things =)  So here's a shot of my daughter on this playground.  =)

Interesting World Geography Facts (Part 2). Some Extra Fun on Lisa Hill's Real Estate Blog

Interesting Geography Facts on Lisa Hill's Daytona Beach Real Estate blog.

Antarctic sunset-photo by world wide photos from National Science Foundation This is Lisa Hill's real estate blog, for buyers and sellers of real estate in the Daytona Beach/Port Orange/Ponce Inlet Florida areas. But today we're going to venture out of our little corner of the world, and take a look at some fun geography facts. I think these are pretty fascinating, and I hope you enjoy them too =)

For Part 1 of this series, go to Interesting World Geography Facts (Part 1). Some Extra Fun on Lisa Hill's Real Estate Blog.

Now for World Geography part 2...

  • New York City was termed "The Big Apple" by touring jazz musicians in the 1930s who used the slang term "apple" for any town or city where they were playing. But to play New York City was to play the Big Time... "The Big Apple".
  • The real name for Los Angeles is actually El Pueblo de Nuestra Senora la Reina de Los Angeles de Porciumcula. By shortening all of this to L.A., it becomes only 3.63% of the true size of it's full name!
  • The oldest city in existence anywhere, is Damascus, Syria, which was flourishing about 2000 years before Rome was founded in 753 B.C.
  • Istanbul, Turkey is the only city in the world that is actually located on TWO continents!
  • The Kola Superdeep Borehole in Russia, has a depth of about 40,226 feet or 7.62 miles (12.261 meters). The hole was dug for scientific research, and turned some very unexpected discoveries, one of which was a giant hydrogen deposit. The hydrogen deposit was so massive that the mud in the hole was "boiling" from it! This hole is officially the deepest hole ever drill by man.
  • In the U.S., your chances of finding an unpaved road is 1%. In Canada, your chances of finding an unpaved road is 75%! (Wonder why? Just take a look at a globe!)mountain-public domain photo by Jon Sullivan
  • Pitcairn Island in Polynesia, at just 1.75 square miles (4.53 sq km) is the smallest island in the world that is also a country. (I found this one especially cool)
  • There is a city called Rome on every continent. Rome, Italy was the 1st city to reach a population of 1 million people, in 133 B.C.
  • Antactica is the driest place on Earth. (refer to part 1 for additional Antarctic facts) The valleys of the Antarctic, near Ross Island have seen no rainfall for 2 million years! (Whoa!)
  • Irony to follow the Anarctic facts... Siberia contains more than 25% of the world's forests. (????)
  • Spain means "the land of rabbits" (LOL)
  • There is a town name Tidikelt in Algeria, in the Sahara Desert, that received no rainfall for an entire decade.
  • The smallest sovereign entity in the world has a population of 80... 20 less than the Vatican. It also has 2 tennis courts. (Things that make you go "hmmm?") It's the Sovereign Military Order of Malta (S.M.O.M.), located in Rome, Italy. This small entity is a sovereign entity under international law, just like the Vatican.
  • The U.S., Eisenhower Interstate System requires that 1 in every 5 miles must be straight so they can be used as airstrips in times of war, or in case of emergency.
  • In Venezuela, the water of Angel Falls drops 3.212 feet (979 meters)... it's 15 times higher than Niagara Falls.

Ormond Beach Real Estate MLS Listings for Sale, November 2009

Ormond Beach Real Estate, by Lisa Hill "The Smart Choice" for all your real estate needs

Ormond Beach Atlantic OceanI'm now on post number 6 (plus the additional post that compiled the information of the first 4) of my blogging series for each city in East Volusia County, providing real estate information on the available MLS listings; the types of properties, the number available, and the price ranges for each group.

For this post we're featuring the city of Ormond Beach, located to the north of Daytona Beach, with the city of Holly Hill in between Daytona Beach and Ormond Beach (but Holly Hill does not extend over the bridge/Intracoastal Waterway, to the "beachside" which is what Volusia County locals call the area between the Intracoastal and the Atlantic Ocean. It's actually a peninsula. And the city of Ormond Beach DOES extend to the beachside. Actually, Ormond Beach spans the largest area from west to east; greater than any of the other cities in the Daytona Beach area. There are acres and acres of farmland and country houses as you reach the west edge of the city... past the outlying subdivisions, all west of I-95. From I-95 to the Intracoastal you'll find many different types of houses, duplexes, condos and subdivisions. There are also some varied subdivisions(acreage, lake frontage, golf & more) as you travel north on U.S.1, all the way to the point where I-95 makes a turn and crosses U.S.1.

And then there are the beachside homes... so many beautiful, oceanfront condos, and houses within walking distance to the river or the ocean. And then there's the wonderful Ormond Library, the many parks and nature reserves and the fantastic Tomoka State Park on the beautiful Tomoka River.

All that being said, the previously mentioned real estate listings are found in the chart below. All information is from the Daytona Beach Area Association of REALTORS® Multiple Listing Service (MLS). Use this chart to get an idea of what it costs to buy a house, condo, duplex/townhouse... bearing in mind the location: some are on the ocean or river.

South Daytona Real Estate, by Lisa Hill "The Smart Choice" for all your real estate needs

Halifax Landing condos on the Intracoastal Waterway in South Daytona FL I'm now on post number 5 (plus the additional post that compiled the information of the first 4) of my blogging series for each city in East Volusia County, providing real estate information on the available MLS listings; the types of properties, the number available, and the price ranges for each group.

For this post we're featuring the city of South Daytona, located to the immediate south of Daytona Beach, with the exception that South Daytona does not crossover to the peninsula/beachside/east side of the Intracoastal. But South Daytona does hold some incredible, brand new condos with stunning views of the Intracoastal.

That being said, the previously mentioned real estate listings are found in the chart below. All information is from the Daytona Beach Area Association of REALTORS® Multiple Listing Service (MLS).

Here Come The Blog Cops! December 1st FTC Changes

Changes in Blogging Rules. Lisa Hill, "The Smart Choice" for all your real estate needs

I've been hearing rumors of this, but this is the first definitive information I've read. Thanks to Ken Cook for this.

Lisa Hill Daytona Beach native and professional real estate agent

list real estate in Daytona Beach with lisa hill and adams cameron realtors and get it sold

Via Ken Cook, FHA Home Loans 678-439-8683:

December 1st, The FTC, Testimonials and your Blog/New Media

December 1, 2010 is the date your blog and all new media advertising meets new enforcement and scrutiny. Meet the Federal Trade Commission 16 CFR Part 255 "Guides Concerning the Use of Endorsements and Testimonials in Advertising". Much of the "guide" applies to celebrity endorsements and the use of "disclaimers" such as those which say "results not typical".

The word "endorsement" is used 188 times in 16 CFR 255 and the word "testimonial" is used 92 times. Where the real danger comes in, of course, is if someone complains to the FTC about something they read on your blog, Facebook, Posterous or any other New Media outlet. You and I, reader, both know there are "testimonials" even here on AR which are not even from real customers or are using real customer's names but they have no idea those testimonials exist. That is the focus of 16 CFR 255 in addition to endorsements and testimonials on late night television.

It has been noted that it is difficult to determine how much deception actually occurs from false testimonials and I am sure it would be very difficult and costly to prove a violation of FTC regulations on a small basis for individual blogs. The best way to avoid violations is to solicit testimonials from your clients that you can keep on file or to use a third party company like iKarma for example.

Not Perfect... Just Like Me: Speechless Sunday on Lisa Hill's Daytona Beach Real Estate Blog

OK. So as usual, this is not spechless =P

Happy Sunday! Once again, I'm sharing a photo by my friend Nick. I guess it pays to know some people ;-)  I love his photos! FYI, most of his photos are NOT in the public domain. He's just allowing me to use them in my blogs, so please remember there are copyright laws! If you're interested in purchasing any of Nick's photos, you can find his work on www.DeviantArt.com. I've taken you directly to his work in the embedded DeviantArt link. And I'm sure you'll be seeing more of his work on my blogs in the future ;-)

So for today's photo, I thought this was appropriate for Sunday. I like the way this cross is not perfectly painted, or perfectly aligned, and untouched by any photo softtware. It's not perfect.... like us. The very reason for the cross!  =)

Ponce Inlet Real Estate and Lighthouse

Ponce Inlet Real Estate, by Lisa Hill "The Smart Choice" for all your real estate needs

Ponce Inlet real estate and lighthouseThis week I got a call from a past client who previously bought a beautiful oceanfront house in Ponce Inlet Florida. They're still in the planning stages of consolidating their real estate holdings, so we haven't placed their fabulous house on the market yet, but since their home is so close to the incredible Ponce Inlet lighthouse, I made a little detour after our appointment yesterday. As you've probably noticed from some of my previous posts, (and the fact that I was born here) this is certainly not my first visit to the Ponce Inlet lighthouse area. But it's always a fun visit, and I never seem to tire of taking pictures of our fantastic lighthouse! So enjoy one of my newest lighthouse photos, and if you're interested in buying or selling real estate in Ponce Inlet Florida, here's some recent real estate data...

You can thank Russel Ray for this one. He actually visited EVERY one of the 5,737 (which grew to 6,035 before he finished) groups on Active Rain, and created a short list of 100 groups that would be good for anyone to join... especially our new members.

This is a fantastic, selfless idea! I personally love it, even though it's going to take me quite a bit of time to check out these 100 groups... which make is even more amazing that Russel went through all 6,035 of them! Now enjoy Russel's post below =)

Interesting World Geography Facts (Part 1). Some Extra Fun on Lisa Hill's Real Estate Blog

Interesting Geography Facts on Lisa Hill's Daytona Beach Real Estate blog.

This is Lisa Hill's real estate blog, for buyers and sellers of real estate in the Daytona Beach/Port Orange/Ponce Inlet Florida areas. But today we're going to venture out of our little corner of the world, and take a look at some fun geography facts. I think these are pretty fascinating, and I hope you enjoy them too =)Antarctica-Ice Pressure Ridge

  • More than half of the the U.S. coastline is in Alaska.
  • The Amazon Rain Forest produces more than 20% of the world's oxygen supply. (Good reason to protect it!)
  • The Amazon River pushes so much water into the Atlantic Ocean, that more than 100 miles away from the mouth of the river, fresh water can be dipped out of the ocean.
  • One more Amazon fact... The volume of water in the Amazon River is greater than the next 8 (yes, that's EIGHT) largest rivers in the world combined, AND more than 3 times (yep, THREE times) the flow of all rivers in the U.S.
  • Of all the world's ice, 90% of it covers Antarctica. This same ice also represents 70% of all the world's fresh water.
  • As if the Antarctica ice and water stats aren't significant enough... Antarctica is by it's nature, actually a desert! Even with all that ice and water, the average annual precipitation is about 2 inches! It's the driest place on Earth, with an absolute humidity that is lower than the Gobi desert.
  • The country of Brazil got it's name from the nut; not the other way around.
  • Canada has more lakes than all the lakes in the rest of the world, combined. AND the name Canada is an Indian word which means "Big Village". =)
  • Except for Warsaw, Poland... Chicago has the world's largest Polish population.
  • Woodward Avenue in Detroit Michigan, was the first paved road, anywhere! Thus, it has the designation of M-1.
  • Ohio has no natural lakes. Every one is man-made.
  • The first business was setup in St. Paul Minnesota. But it was not originally called St. Paul Minnesota. It was originally called "Pig's Eye"! (lol) Why? Because the man who setup that first business there was named Pierre 'Pig's Eye' Parrant. =)

And that's enough for today's lesson in fascinating geography facts. Some even cooler facts are soon to come! =D

Now back to the real nature of my blog... that being real estate, if you're interested in buying or selling real estate in the area of Daytona Beach, FL, I'd love to help.
